Almost everything else in precision ag sits on top of a field boundary. Coverage maps, acre counts, section control, prescriptions, documentation and every summary you look at in the winter all reference it. If the boundary is wrong, all of them inherit the error, and most of the time nobody notices because the number that comes out still looks reasonable.
A lot of boundaries in use today were traced from aerial imagery in an office, or drawn quickly on a display years ago, or came along with the ground when a neighbor shared a file. Those get you close. Close is fine for a field list and not fine for a machine that is deciding when to shut off a section.

Driving beats tracing for a simple reason: the Gator follows the ground as it exists right now. Where the field actually ends at the waterway. Where the fence came out. Where the new tile main runs. Where the grass strip starts. Where the turn row narrowly clears the ditch. None of those are reliably visible in imagery, and some of them are years out of date in whatever imagery a mapping tool is using.
A Gator is the right tool for it because it can go where you would not take a truck and where you do not want to take a tractor. Wet corners, waterways, headlands, tight passes between a field edge and a treeline. It is small enough to hold a real line along the edge, which matters, because a boundary is only as accurate as how closely the vehicle tracked the edge you meant.
Every acre you record is measured against a boundary. If the boundary is oversized, your yield per acre reads low and your applied rate per acre reads low, because the denominator is too big. If it is undersized, everything reads high. Neither error announces itself, which is what makes it dangerous. You just quietly compare a field to itself across years and to other fields, using numbers that are consistently off.
It also matters in every conversation where the acre number leaves your farm. Landlord settlements. Crop insurance reporting. Lender paperwork. Program acreage. Custom application billing. An acre figure that came from a driven boundary is a figure you can stand behind.
Section control is one of the clearest returns in precision ag, and it is entirely dependent on the boundary. The machine shuts sections off when it crosses an edge it believes exists. If the boundary is thirty feet inside the real edge, you leave a strip of unplanted or unsprayed ground around the entire field. If it is thirty feet outside, you plant and spray into the grass, the road ditch and the waterway every single pass.
Multiply that by the perimeter of every field you farm and it becomes real money in seed and chemical, every year, in both directions. Point rows and irregular fields make it worse because there is far more edge relative to area.
Interior boundaries matter here too. Waterways, ponds, well heads, tile risers, terraces and building sites can be mapped as exclusion areas so the machine shuts off over them automatically. That saves input and it keeps applications off places you should not be applying.
A prescription is a map, and it is built inside a boundary. Zones and grids are laid out within the boundary you supply, so an inaccurate boundary produces zones that do not line up with the field and rates that get applied in the wrong place, most visibly at the edges where a lot of the variability is concentrated anyway.
In Operations Center, the boundary is also the anchor for the field record. It sets the acre count, it determines what a machine sees when it enters the field, and it is what makes automatic field detection put the day's work under the right name. Clean, accurate boundaries are a large part of why some accounts stay organized on their own and others need untangling every year.
Once boundaries are correct and loaded, sharing works better too. An agronomist, a co-op or a custom applicator working from your account is working from the same field shape you are.

It starts with a list. Every field you farm, owned and rented, with the names you actually use. That list is worth getting right before anyone drives, because half the value of the exercise is ending up with a field list that matches reality. This is usually when growers discover the account has two entries for one farm, or a field that has not been theirs in three years.
Then we schedule around your ground conditions. Boundaries get driven when field edges are accessible and you are not in the middle of something, which usually means before planting or after harvest. Frozen or firm ground is easier on the edges than soft spring ground.

Then boundaries get processed and uploaded into your John Deere Operations Center account, filed under the correct client, farm and field. Acre counts get checked against what you expected, and where there is a meaningful difference we tell you rather than assuming the new number is obviously right.
Then it is done, and it stays done. Boundaries do not need redriving every year. You update them when something changes: ground added or dropped, a fence removed, a waterway installed, a road project, a field split or combined.
