An inspection is not a repair. It is a structured look at a machine by a technician who knows where that model fails, done far enough ahead of the season that you can decide what to do about what turns up. You come out of it with a condition report, a parts list and a set of choices.
The value is in the timing, not the discovery. Most of what an inspection finds, you would have found eventually, usually in the field, usually at the worst hour. Finding it in February means you decide whether to fix it now, order the part and fix it later, or run it another season with your eyes open. All three are legitimate answers. What you lose without an inspection is the choice.

The programs are separate because the machines fail differently. A planter inspection and a combine inspection have almost nothing in common beyond the fact that both are done before the machine has to work. Planters are split by row count because the scope, the time and the number of failure points are genuinely different between a twelve row and a twenty four row machine.
On a tractor, an inspection concentrates on the systems that strand you. Engine condition and fluid analysis, cooling system and radiator condition, belts and hoses, air intake, the fuel and emissions system, hydraulic pumps and couplers for leaks and pressure, PTO, brakes, steering, front axle and drive components, the electrical system and charging, cab climate and controls, and software levels on the display and controllers.
Tires and ballast get attention too, and they are underrated. A tractor set up wrong for the load costs fuel and traction on every pass, and the fix is usually free. On 4WD tractors, articulation joints, axle seals and final drives are common findings. On row crop tractors, hitch and drawbar wear, hydraulic capacity for the implement you are pulling, and guidance and receiver setup come up constantly, especially on machines that changed implements since last year.
Combines have the most to look at and the highest cost of failure, because they fail during the narrowest window in the year. An inspection covers the feederhouse, threshing and separating components, concaves, cleaning shoe, sieves, augers, unloading system, chopper and spreader, drives, belts and chains, bearings, the engine and cooling package, and the harvest technology including yield and moisture sensing and the calibration those depend on.
Corn head inspections look at gathering chains, snapping rolls, stalk rolls, knife rolls, deck plates, gearboxes and drives. Platform inspections cover the sickle, guards, hold-downs, wear plates, the reel and its drive, the auger or draper belts, and the cutterbar drive. Heads take abuse and hide it well. A gearbox that has been running low on oil since last fall gives no warning at all until it seizes, and it will pick harvest to do it.
Planter inspections are about singulation and placement, because that is what the machine is paid to do. Meters and their calibration, seed tubes and sensors, disc openers and their contact, gauge wheels and bearings, closing wheels, down force components, row unit parallel arms, drives, chains or motors, vacuum or air delivery, and the full electronic harness and monitor setup. Fertilizer attachments and markers if the machine carries them. A worn meter costs you stand quality across every acre and never announces itself.
Drill Box Air CCS inspections cover metering, the air system and fan, hoses and distribution, seed delivery, openers and closers, and the sensing that tells you whether any of it is working. Sprayer inspections cover the pump, plumbing, valves, strainers, nozzles and their wear pattern, boom structure and folding, boom height control, rate control and section control, the rinse system, and the tank and agitation. Nozzles wear out gradually and quietly. Checking flow against specification is one of the cheapest things a person can do to protect a chemical bill.
Baler inspections cover pickup teeth and cam, belts or rolls and chains, bearings and the driveline, knotter or net wrap system, monitors and sensors, and the bale shape and density components. Mower conditioner inspections look at the cutterbar or disc modules and their oil, knives, conditioner rolls and their clearance, the driveline, and the suspension and float that determine cut quality on uneven ground.
Tillage inspections are mostly about ground-engaging wear and frame integrity. Sweeps, shovels, disc blades and bearings, shanks and standards, springs and trips, rolling baskets and harrows, the depth control system, hydraulics and hoses, frame welds and the hitch. Worn ground engaging tools change how the tool runs before they look worn to the eye.
Self-Propelled Forage Harvester and forage head inspections cover the cutterhead, knives and shear bar, kernel processor, feed rolls, blower and spout, the driveline and engine package, and the metal and stone detection systems. On compact construction machines, Skid Steer, Compact Track Loader, Compact Wheel Loader and Compact Excavator inspections cover undercarriage or tires, hydraulics and cylinders, the loader or boom and its pins and bushings, quick attach, engine and cooling, controls, and safety systems. Undercarriage on a track machine is worth measuring rather than eyeballing, because it is the single largest owning cost on the machine and it is manageable if you catch it early.
The case for inspections comes down to one comparison. In the shop, a failing part is a part. In the field, the same part is a part plus everything it damages plus the hours you lose plus whatever the weather does while you wait.
A bearing that seizes on a header can take the shaft and the housing with it. A hydraulic hose that lets go in a field means cleanup, a lost afternoon and possibly a contaminated system. A planter meter that drifts costs you nothing visible on the day and shows up as stand variation across every acre you planted. None of those repair bills is the real number. The real number is what the machine was supposed to be doing while it sat.
There is also the scheduling side. In season, you are in a queue with everyone else and parts lead times stretch across the whole region at once. In the off-season, your machine gets attention and parts arrive on normal timelines. That is the same repair at a fraction of the total cost.

As early in the off-season as you can. The point of an inspection is not just finding problems, it is finding them while you still have time to decide what to do. Booking early means shop capacity is available, parts arrive on normal lead times, and you can choose between repairing now, ordering parts and repairing later, or running another season knowingly. Wait until the weeks before the season and the region's demand for the same parts and the same technicians spikes at once.

On track machines, measuring undercarriage wear rather than eyeballing it is worth the time. Undercarriage is typically the largest owning cost on the machine and it is manageable when it is caught early.
