Farming reclaimed Black Swamp ground

Henry County was part of the Great Black Swamp, and the ground here still farms like it. What is now some of the richest cropland in the United States was dense, wet forest and marsh until settlers spent decades cutting ditches and burying tile through the second half of the 1800s. Local clay tile mills supplied the drainage that turned the swamp into farm ground, and that inheritance is still the central management issue on most Henry County farms. Poor natural drainage is the main soil limitation, and nearly everything here depends on tile and open ditches doing their job.

The result is level, heavy, high-organic ground that grows corn, soybeans and wheat as the main cash crops, with tomatoes and sugar beets historically grown as specialty crops in the area. Field sizes are large, layouts are square and the Maumee River runs right through the middle of the county past Napoleon, Florida and Grand Rapids. When you farm ground like this, timing is everything, because heavy soil that is fit on Tuesday can be unworkable by Thursday.
