Black Swamp ground and what it grows

Nearly all of the farm ground around Archbold was once under the Great Black Swamp, the wetland that covered Fulton, Henry, Williams, Wood, Defiance, Paulding, Putnam and neighboring counties before it was cleared and drained. That history is not a museum piece here. It is why this ground is flat, heavy and productive, and it is why tile drainage is not optional. By 1880 more than fifty tile factories were running in northwest Ohio, and the tile lines that were put in then are still being replaced and upgraded today.

What comes off that ground is mainly corn, soybeans and wheat, with specialty acres scattered through the area and a strong livestock and dairy presence going back generations. German Township around Archbold has been the center of an Amish and Mennonite farming community since Alsatian and Swiss settlers arrived in the 1830s, and that community still runs a meaningful share of the farms, dairies and shops between Archbold, Pettisville and Stryker.

Nutrient rules are part of the job now

Fulton County sits in the Western Lake Erie Basin, so nutrient management is not just agronomy here, it is compliance and paperwork. Fulton County producers are eligible to enroll acreage in H2Ohio, the state water quality initiative, and enrollment requires a current soil test that is not older than four years and an approved voluntary nutrient management plan. Available practices include overwintering cover, subsurface phosphorus placement and manure incorporation. Application rates follow the Tri-State Fertilizer Recommendations.

TRULAND has been in the grain storage and handling business for almost 60 years, and around Archbold that side of the business is as important as equipment.
