Farming Steuben County's lake and moraine country

Steuben County does not farm like the flat black ground an hour south. The last glaciers left this corner of Indiana covered in moraines, kettle holes and more than a hundred natural lakes, including Lake James, and that terrain shapes how ground gets worked here. Fields roll. Field edges follow lake shores, woodlots and the Pigeon Creek and Pigeon River drainage that runs west toward the St. Joseph River. A lot of operations here are 300 to 900 acre corn and soybean farms with hay ground, pasture and beef or dairy cattle mixed in, and a good number of them are still run by one family with one hired hand.

Precision ag earns its keep faster on odd-shaped ground than it does on a square section. When your fields wrap around a lake, a woodlot or a county drain, accurate boundaries, guidance lines and section control stop a lot of overlap and skips. We do boundary mapping using a TRULAND-supplied 835M Gator and precision ag equipment, driving the boundaries and uploading them into John Deere Operations Center, and a Full-Service Boundary Program is available.

Beyond that, our Total Farm Support Plan is $1,500 for spring or fall. It covers an Operations Center pre-season review and data clean-up, data transfer from Operations Center to your equipment, software updates for equipment compatibility, in-field technology startup and a full year of Call Center support. Agronomy service packages include Data Services at $1 per acre for management zones or sample grids uploaded to Operations Center, in-season soil nitrogen testing at $60 per sample, plant tissue testing at $60 per sample and manure testing at $90 per sample.
