Suction and discharge hose are not interchangeable. Suction hose is reinforced so it does not collapse under vacuum, and using ordinary hose on the suction side will flatten it and stop your flow. Keep the suction run as short and straight as you can.
Most engine pumps need to be primed before they will pull, meaning the pump housing gets filled with water first. A dry pump will run without moving anything and can damage the seal. Also keep the strainer on the intake and keep it up off the bottom, since a strainer sitting in mud plugs immediately.
Plan where the water goes. Discharge has to run far enough away that it does not simply come back, and it must not be sent into a neighbor's property, a septic field or somewhere that causes a new problem. Know local rules about discharging into ditches and storm drains, especially with sediment-laden water.
Run engine pumps outdoors and never in a basement, crawl space, pit or enclosed area, because of carbon monoxide. This comes up constantly with flooded basements, and it kills people. Keep the engine outside and run hose down to the water.
Set the pump on stable, level ground above the water line where it will not be pulled in or submerged. Watch for hose whip when you start up and secure connections.
Be careful working around open water, pits and steep-sided excavations, especially alone. Water hides depth and footing, and banks give way when they are saturated.
